Left/Right + In Between Zone: Homage to Performance Art,” China Time, Kampnagel, Hamburg, Germany    September 21 – 24, 2006

The Long March Project was invited to take part in “China Time 2006”, a cultural festival organized by Kampnagel-Internationale Kulturfabrik (Hamburg – Germany). A portion of the project was a two day workshop in which, Lu Jie and Qiu Zhijie introduced the history, events, works, and methodology of the Long March Project to an international committee of “Long Marchers.” A discussion regarding avant-garde, performance, and site was held, exploring issues of history, politics, and relationship between individual and collective. The result was a proposal for two site specific works, “Avant-garde” and “Homage to Performance Art (Farewell to the Avant-Garde).” “Avant-Garde” is an intervention/performance worl. Walking backwards while in single file line, the Long Marchers walked in reverse through the “Mahjong – Contemporary Chinese art from the Sigg Collection” exhibition on display at the Hamburg Museum of Art, and then continued on throughout the city of Hamburg finally arriving back to the museum. The process lasted three hours. At that night, Qiu’s closed -eye performance “Left/Right”, together with the happenings of the participants of the workshop formed the Farewell to the Avant-Garde.
