How to Empty Your Mind

2008717-817

July 17th - August 17th, 2008

Participants: Selective graduate and undergraduate students from the Total Art Studio and Visual Culture Center, CAA, and other voluntary participants.

How to Empty Your Mind is a "total art" proposal to make an art and education project as part of the Ullens Foundation Collection. During a one-month period, artist and participants gathered in  a space combining an exhibition hall, a classroom, and a workshop to discuss various topics and to develop thinking training. During this process, blackboards were used to explain and to record writings and scribbles, which must be presented in the form of rotated mirror texts.

The blackboards which were filled with rotated text and images were carved to become the originals for woodblock printing. A workshop was set up during the exhibition; printing presses were used to produce unlimited editions of wood-block prints. During the entire exhibition, the workshop produced as many prints as possible. The prints were free for participants and visitors to take home, for they will spread into social spaces beyond the exhibition/classroom/workshop space.

108 versions of woodblock print were produced during the project.

How to Empty Your Mind is an important proposal brought up by Qiu Zhijie during his artistic creation and teaching.

The basics of this proposition are: The existing prejudices and stereotypes we possess may form a kind of shadow and obstacle to building a more creative relationship between ourselves and objects or history, even within ourselves. Therefore, we should keep emptying our minds. To negate the negative effects prejudicing and stereotyping have on us is not a one-time enlightenment of attitude. It requires a great effort to begin with, long-term practice to maintain, and a set of effective mechanism to reactivate periodically. To empty our mind is both a task of subversion and a process of construction. It has a goal, and it is also a type of training. During this process, the map of knowledge and faith, disposition and habit, vision and expression are re-depicted.

The workshop is divided into the following parts: “The Necessity to Emptying Your Mind”, “A Self Investigation”, “Understanding an Object through Making Connections”, “Understanding the World through Walking”, “the Methodology of Making Mistakes and Learning from Mistakes”, “How Does Secret Coding Become Possible?”, “The Red Cross Unrelated to Hospital”, “The Misconception of the Bridge of Nine Turnings”, “Emptying Your Mind through Google”, “The Folding of Common Sense”, “Fight against Memory”, “Map of Conception”, “Reading and the Stranger”, “The Waterfall Formed by Flying Birds”, “Motto Club”, “A Plan with Nine Uses”, “Action of No-Win and Action of No-Effect”.
