Description
Editorial note for the rebuilt archive
A New Account of Tales of the World: Composite Characters is a public calligraphy project in Zhangzhou Ancient City. It uses composite characters as a contemporary writing method, connecting classical allusion, internet-era language play, and festive viewing in an old urban site.
Composite characters compress multiple meanings, words, and voices into a single written form. They resemble riddles and signs at the same time, keeping the bodily force of calligraphy while entering streets, shops, corridors, and ordinary public attention.
The project grew out of the artist's Spring Festival couplet writing in Liyuanpo, Xi'an, where traditional auspicious composite characters were reactivated and redirected toward contemporary internet phrases and local speech.
In Zhangzhou, the project was rapidly developed for the Lantern Festival. Around 250 newly made characters were produced, including Minnan expressions and local references such as Aipin Caihui Ying, Jiuguo Yingxiong, Kaizhang Daji, and names of local foods and shops.
Installed throughout Zhangzhou Ancient City, the works turned writing into an inexpensive but highly visible public event. KT boards, mobile display panels, printed signs, and red square calligraphic objects connected tourists, shops, social media, and local festival atmosphere.
The title refers to the classical text A New Account of Tales of the World while also pointing to contemporary popular sayings. The method is not simply to squeeze several characters together; it relies on shared radicals and strokes, redistributing meaning through structure and calligraphic movement.
The header and gallery images record the 2024 site: red square calligraphic objects hang between traditional architecture and night lighting. Writing is no longer only a work on paper; it becomes something encountered, photographed, read, and misread in public space.
