Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Completed and Open to Traffic Ahead of Time

On 29, Dec. the first highway bridge across the Yangtze River was successfully completed. 50,000 people in Nanjing assembled to celebrate the victory and cheered Long, Long Live Chairman Mao!

The construction of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge connects the railways and highways of the South and the North, which is of extraordinary political, economic and strategic significance.

Nanjing, Dec, 29 (Xinhua) While thousands of millions of Chinese people were celebrating the new successful H-Bomb test, another piece of exciting news came all the way from the Yangtze River: under the leadership of omnipotent Mao Zedong's Thoughts, the Chinese working class successfully completed the construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge on 29, Dec. 1968. Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge, a gigantic masterpiece constructed by Chinese without outside engineering assistance, was completed and open to traffic ahead of time.

In the morning of Dec. 29, more than 50,000 Nanjing people assembled to celebrate the completion and cheered the great victory achieved by Chairman Mao's proletarian revolutionary route and by the Cultural Revolution. After the ceremony, red signal flares flew high into the sky. In the midst of the sounds of firecrackers, gongs and drums, more than 100 floats loaded full with representatives from industry, agriculture and the military army and young Red Guards in Nanjing slowly passed through the highway bridge. Cheers of Long Long Live Great Leader Chairman Mao could be heard all over the space.

The completion of the spectacular Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is a great miracle in the history of world bridge construction. The railway bridge is over 6,700-meter-long and the highway bridge, over 4,500 meters. The double-decker and double-track highway and railway bridge is the first of its kind in China. On both ends of the bridge, 4 huge statues of workers, peasants and soldiers are erected. Twenty-two double arch bridges compose the highway approach bridge adjacent to urban area. It looks like a beautiful rainbow, which adds more grandness to the magnificent Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. In the early morning, the gigantic bridge seems like a steel rainbow under the rising sun. The three red flags, erected at the bridge towers, appear extraordinarily eye-catching. In the evening, miles-long lights look as if the Milky Way is falling into the river.

A route or an idea must be repeated again and again and made known to not only a small number of people but to all the revolutionary masses. The revolutionary masses said the history of constructing Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was the history of struggle between the two worlds and two routes; and Chairman Mao's Proletarian Revolutionary Route won a complete success. The betrayer Liu Shaoqi and his clique presumptuously revolted against the great guideline to rely on one's own effort to revive, and to work hard for the prosperity of the country, brought forward by great leader Chairman Mao. They absurdly asserted that the construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge will not be successfully completed without the assistance of foreign experts. Armed with Mao Zedong's T[DU1]houghts, the engineers and construction workers refuted Liu's fallacy. They followed Chairman Mao's great instruction, to break through the superstition in foreign expertise and explore an industrial development route of our own, and firmly carried out the guideline to rely on one's own effort to revive. They earnestly studied the great work of Chairman Mao, On Practice, and accumulated experience through practice. They were bold enough to pick the way that no predecessors ever picked and to climb up the high mountain that no predecessors ever dared to climb. They set a good example of constructing bridge totally on their own. During the Cultural Revolution, with the great support of People's Liberation Army, workers constructing the bridge, thoroughly refuted Liu Shaoqi's counterrevolutionary and revisionist route and guaranteed the successful completion of the construction of the bridge.

The completion of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge proves that as long as we stick to Mao Zedong's Thought, firmly carry out Chairman Mao's proletarian revolutionary route, fully rely on the power of the working class and thoroughly refute Liu Shaoqi's counterrevolutionary and revisionist route, we can conquer any difficulty that we may encounter and create unbelievable miracles.

The great instructions of great leader Chairman Mao, the working class must lead all and to deepen struggle-criticism-transformation, had greatly boosted the morale of construction workers of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. Bearing in mind the deep-seated hatred to betrayer Liu Shaoqi and his clique, construction workers were passionately attacking their counterrevolutionary and revisionist route. Armed with the invincible Mao Zedong's Thoughts, the working class exerted all their talents and creativity to speed up the construction of the bridge. After the publication of the gazette of the 12th Plenary Session of 8th NPC, construction workers enthusiastically responded to the appeal put forward in the gazette. Despite bad weather and tough conditions, they sped up the construction pace and completed the construction of the bridge ahead of time.

Note: The railway bridge of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was open to traffic on 1, October of this year. The highway bridge was open to traffic on 29, December. Thus, the construction of Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was completed.

In the capital city, hundreds of thousands of people assembled at the place where the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee was located and Tian An Men Square.
