Qiu Zhijie must be the most versatile artist of his generation; he is both artist, writer and curator, excelling in all three fields. Qiu features in most important exhibitions of Chinese art, including the upcoming Yokohama Trienniale in September. Qiu's recent project was chief curator of the Nanjing Triennial in May.
Qiu Zhijie ' s new photographic works, Where series and Homage to Hans C. Anderson series, are taken in the darkness of different scenery in China. He is inspired by the basic theory of light ' and time ' in photography. We can see ' the objects in a photograph because of the existence of light. The artist intends to make light ' as the main character in his works. He used an electric torch to write ' the light ' in front of various important historical buildings in Beijing and Nanjing, like the Tiananmen Square or the Bell Tower. In Anderson series, Qiu selected sentences from Anderson ' s stories for his own light writing ' .
