I selected various revolutionary slogans
and discourses from Chinese history,
from the first revolution against the
Emperor in 300 BC to the most recent
ones. Revolutions and uprisings
happened periodically in Chinese
history, and each revolution gave birth
to some famous sayings, remarking the
ideal and desire of that historical time.
I chisel the characters on a piece of
cement board, printed the stele, then
cover it with cement again, and chisel
sentence from next revolution again.
I repeat the process until it becomes
a cement cube looking like a modern
Minimalistic sculpture, but with 20
layers. No characters can be seen from
its surface, but the trace of ink printing
and molding can be found from the side
of the sculpture.
Since I use the historical calligraphy
style of each aphorism in its time, the 20
layers of prints can also been seen as a
reflection of the history of calligraphy, as
well as the history of revolutionary ideas. |
