ures” present four different forms of water. When light passes through an uneven transparent object, refraction occurs; this phenomenon is known as caustics. A research group from the University of Science and Technology of China has invented an algorithm that manipulates light to generate images by creating grooves on the surface of transparent objects based on this principle. After the algorithm generates a model, a micrometer-level engraving machine processes thousands of convex and concave lens combinations on the acrylic surface. Areas where light converges form bright regions in the image, while areas where light disperses create dark regions. Ultimately, the arrangement of light and shadow composes the target image. Artist Qiu Zhijie used the phenomena of the refraction and reflection of light, combining with the cutting-edge research from the University of Science and Technology of China, to create a visible representation of water ripples, resonating with the theme of this exhibition, “Garden of Reflected Paradises” or “Mirror, Flower, Water and the Moon (Jing Hua Shui Yue),” particularly the aspect of “water.” Water symbolizes the flowing passage of time, encompassing all things.
