The small knocking down the big.

The physical principle of the Domino effect is that when one block falls, its thrust forward is greater than that of the earlier block. As a result, if the blocks are identical in size, their speed will accelerate. In other words, the force of the forward push will increase. However, if the pieces vary in size, then one block, on falling, may knock down another block that is 1.5 times the size of the previous one.
In accordance with this principle, the physicist Alfred North Whitehead once made a group of dominoes, 13 blocks in all, with the first being the smallest, which is no bigger than the little fingernail (8.95mm long, 4.76mm wide and 1.19mm thick). Other blocks are 1.5 times in size than the earlier ones, with the biggest being 61mm long, 30.5mm wide and 7.6mm thick. The energy the 13th domino releases is 2 billion times that of the first one. Theoretically, if the series of dominoes are continuously made, then the 32nd block, on falling, will be able to push down a building the size of the Empire State Building.
In this installation, many wooden dominoes are planted on the lawn of the Virgin Garden at the Chinese Pavilion, constituting a gigantic image of a tree.
The one that is close to the root of the tree is the biggest and is one meter tall, 50 cm wide and 20 cm thick. The closer they are to the “branch”, the smaller the dominoes they are. The smallest piece is about the size of a matchbox.
The growth ring of the wood is shown on the surface of the dominoes and the center of the growth ring is the center of the vertical side of the block. Thus, all the dominoes on the ground form multiple sections of a bona fide tree.
The size of the “big tree” can be adjusted on location. The branching out of the images and their directions can be adjusted in accordance with the objects on the lawn.
At the opening, audiences will be invited to participate in pushing down the dominoes at the end of the “tree branch”. The small dominoes knock down the slightly larger one and, in succession, they fall, until the biggest block closest to the tree root falls down.
