Coffin vigil and the three states of spirits  1998

The three states of spirits are uncertainty, nonexistence, nirvana according to Buddhism, which will be assumed by the showings of three monitors put on the bed of steel wires:

The screen on the left shows the scene of everyday life combined with fragments of daily apparatus and human images. Trivial and common things appear and disappear with the echo and wane of the bell to express the sentiment of ups and downs. In the middle, numerous makeup faces of Beijing Opera flashes with such a high speed that audiences can never be fixed on any of the images. To the right, negative pictures of a tunnel with distinct metaphor show up and the spirits are led to the drowsy contemplation with the patters of Tibetan Buddhism. The three groups of pictures on the sickbeds represent the three spiritual states of apperception, cognition and imagination with direct denomination., while the imago of sickbeds is shown by the transfusion bottles hanging on the head of the beds.

the coffin vigil is the pictures shown on the monitor screen beside every bed: an hand drawing the curves of an electroencephalogram with a pen and various definitions of brain death inserted constantly.

Compared with the humanism descriptions of spirits, the coffin vigil is trying to define human and spirits from the physical and physiological point of view. Thus the combination of the two reflects a dramatic strain.
